I really loved this book! The writing style in particular grabbed me right away -- after I finished the book, I read it again because I loved so many of the turns of phrases I wanted to experience them again. The story is effectively told back and forth through different time periods - the Vietnam War - hippy 60s San Francisco - present time. I'm left wanting to know more about the characters and what they are up to now - maybe a sequel?
Thoroughly enjoyable book, well written, evocative, self-searching. I’ve seen it described as both memoir and literary fiction, and from my reading it felt like both. As a voyeuristic reader I’m left wondering how many of the events described are based on the author’s lived experience and how many were created from his imagination. Either way, a fine read!
Fantastic book - loved every word... Trivelas has the uncanny ability to write simply and clearly yet powerful in his words. Can't wait for his next book!
Trivelas presents an intimate, fictionalized account of one man's journey through the Vietnam War, the Free Love movement, and formative life events. The story shifts back and forth in a narrative that's best likened to a highly personal photo album of experiences and the protagonist's youthful confusion. This dynamic structure keeps each chapter fresh, offering overseas adventures, dangerous encounters, salacious rendezvous, and even insightful meditations.
I could not put this beautifully written page-turner of a novel down. As heartfelt as it is funny, it tells the story of a Vietnam veteran in the form of vivid snapshots throughout his life. It is an incredibly moving and vivid work of fiction that left this reader feeling like the author was sharing hard-won truths. I can't wait to read his next work
It’s easy to follow - the story is intriguing and leaves you with peace. If you enjoyed the writing style of The Catcher In The Rye, you would love this book. Couldn’t put it down - looking forward to the next book!
Always seeking an inner balance and peace through the ups and downs of life , this is a thought provoking, rewarding read !
